In today’s society, it has become apparent that technology often actively works our wellbeing. Social media divides, distracts, and enslaves. Phones designed by PHD’s blip and flash, breaking our attention spans. Video games addict children, devouring much of their formative years. Pornography ensnares young men, destroying their idea of sex, permanently changing their plastic brains. Worst of all, this is all designed, and not an accident. Technology has been carefully calculated to hold our attentions to a screen—a screen which brings us no true joy, fulfillment or benefit.
The name ‘atrxi’ is taken from the Greek term ‘ataraxia’. Ataraxia is defined as a sense of serene calmness, not troubled by disquiet, either emotional or physical. This term was pioneered and embodied by Epicurus, the Greek philosopher.
But it is not hopeless. With calculated effort, it is possible to eliminate the negative benefits of these technologies. A balanced and fulfilled life is not an impossible task.
